can u tell me name of a few good fantasy fictions??

Postby jackprince » Wed Feb 28, 2007 7:40 am

can u tell me name of a few good fantasy fictions?? actually after reading the Sword of Truth series of Terry Goodkind, i've yet come across a fantasy fiction book which can interest me any farther than a few chapter... all of them seems to me to be a lil childish or overtly superficial... i'm asking if u can tell me name of the books which i may find to be as interesting as sword of truth books...could u please...

at least tell me which of the fanfics u like... i'll try them

thanx

... i'd suggest that you look at the authors and titles that are posted here and that you X-check it with a site like
Code: Select all
http://www.fantasticfiction.co.uk/index.html

That should give you a good hint of what you might like...

that's a good suggestion topha...but the problem is in summery all the stories does seem to be interesting....but dont u think a fiction gets more live when the characters in it becomes live with the skill of narration of the author??... and a summery hardly gives u the feel of what there's in it...

By the by,... could u tell me which of the fanfic books u liked most?... i may as well start with the titles people suggest me rather than trying each of the books throuygh a few chapters....

...well, maybe you also could be a bit more specific about your likes and dislikes, but in the meantime try Cook Rick - Wizardry.

Actually, I've often found most of Terry Goodkind's books to be somewhat childish and superficial :P. But that's just me. If you're looking for more "serious" fantasy fiction try these:

Memory, Sorrow and Thorn series - Tad Williams
www.tadwilliams.com/dragonbone_chair.html

Winter of the World series - Michael Scott Rohan
www.users.zetnet.co.uk/mike.scott.rohan/first_page.htm

Song of Ice and Fire series - George R R Martin
http://dannyreviews.com/h/Song_Ice_Fire.html

Believable characters, real world politics and magic very much on the sidelines. The Winter of the World series is one of my all time favourites. All follow the standard fantasy plot (e.g. find the 12 mystic gadgets to stop Foozle The Evil Overlord) but do it in such a refreshing way you won't notice. Happy reading.

This series is arguably the best I've read bar none. Only problem is the author REALLY takes his time writing the next book(s) so I always ended up re-reading the previous books to understand the latest. I really hate cliffhangers but I find it hard to criticize this excellent series. TRY IT! :)

Hi! One of my favourite fantasy series is the Raven series by James Barclay. I'm not sure where it will fall in the serious-light spectrum because I haven't read any of the other books reced here. Unfortunately it's not available in the forums (or it wasn't the last time I checked). But I think it definitely deserves a read. Or two.

ppl - u forgot the Bartimaeus Trilogy - Jonathan Shroud
the ginie there has a very sarcastic sense of humour

and for someone who likes a bit serious fantasy fiction - try the dark materials trilogy - Phillip Pullman

For real, believable characterisation along with good action in the hard fantasy genre, you should go for:
The Saga of Recluce by L. E. Modesitt
The Wheel of time series , especially upto the Lord Of Chaos(book 6) by Robert Jordan
Song of Ice & Fire
A Tale of the Malazan Book of the Fallen
Prince of Nothing by R. Scott Bakker

These are my personal best. You might like Phillip Pullman's His Dark Materials; Will Mcdermott's Magic, The Gathering; R. A. Salvatore's Drizzt series(Forgotten Realms) etc. Linkz for most of them are here at ctp.

I've always really enjoyed Robin Hobb's writings (though I have yet to start on her Soldier-trilogy)
Series she wrote:
The Farseer-trilogy
The Liveships-trilogy
The Tawny Man-trilogy

I could be wrong about the English names seeing as I read them in Dutch. But should you start reading them, read them in this order. The series are all linked to each other.
